It must be doable long term

  • apple measure A good wight loss plan will help you to lose weight by focusing on healthy eating principles and exercise. It will not be about starving yourself, eating one type of vegetable or doing something stupid! You can’t starve yourself forever or eat one lone vegetable forever!
  • Your chosen weight loss plan must not promote a full on liquid diet. That’s not doable long term is it? If it promoted meal replacements these must come with proper meals and they must be as nutritious as a healthy meal.
  • It must give you maximum flexibility in meal choices so you can build a program that is right for you. You wouldn’t be happy eating foods you don’t like in the long term would you? So don’t do it in the short term!
  • A good weight loss program will not prohibit any foods, but teach you about food so that you can eat all things in moderation and make the right food choices for your individual goals.
  • Your chosen weight loss plan must provide you with the tools and education you need to not only lose weight but also to maintain your new weight through the right food choices and an exercise program you enjoy and can keep up.

When you are choosing a program to help you lose weight just make sure that whatever you sign up for can be done on a long term basis. Otherwise it will be a crash diet that will result in a yo-yo dieting effect. Not good for your health or your self esteem…

It must be adaptable

apple measureI don’t believe there is any single wonder diet that which works for everybody. The optimal approach depends on the individual needs of different people, their lifestyle choices and food preferences. Therefore your chosen wight loss program should be flexible enough for you to adapt it to your needs. A good weight loss program shouldn’t focus on a single nutrient regime, but on food and exercise preferences that will support the nutritional needs of your body with a weight loss plan that will be successful in the long term.

You should be able to learn about the core values of a healthy diet and the level of exercise you need to do and maintain in order to achieve your weight loss goals. You should be able to use the supplied tools to create a weight loss program perfect just for you.

To find out the which weight loss program I would recommend just drop me an email.

It needs to guide toward a weight loss goal

apple measure

This probably should have come first because without a goal you won’t get anywhere. Your chosen weight loss plan needs to walk you through simple steps to fix your targets and set up a plan to achieve your target.

So you’ll need to understand how overweight you are and how much you need to lose. Your chosen weight loss plan must help you set up a system so that you understand how long it will take you, help you apply the changes that will help you achieve your targets through eating the right foods and exercising and it needs to put checks in place to ensure you stay on track (or get back on track if you go off track)!

Your weight loss plan should guide you through measurements like your body mass index (BMI), working out what you need to lose and measuring your body fat percentage.

To find out the weight loss plan that I recommend that offers all of the above, just email me…

Meal replacement drinks – to be or not to be?

apple measureMeal replacement drinks are fine as long as they stack up:

  • Each meal replacement drink must have a the equivalent of a nutritionally-balanced meal containing valuable proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Make sure this is true.
  • They should be so good for you that you can use them to fill the gaps in your busy lifestyle – e.g. when you would normally skip a meal because you are on the move or too busy. (I use my drink mixes when I am travelling or when I have a hectic schedule – have a nutritionally balanced meal replacement drink is easy, efficient and much better than skipping a meal).
  • They must taste nice! There is no point you force feeding yourself as you won’t maintain it! On the other hand, you might have to see it as a medicine to help you get started on the road to weight loss.
  • You must get at least one meal per day of nutritious food. You can’t live off drink mixes long term so why diet like that?
  • The weight loss program must aim to wean you off drink mixes in the long term by teaching you what you need to know in order to manage your food in such a way as to not put on weight.

So look carefully and the meal replacement drinks on the market and don’t depend on them for your weight loss because it will not last.

To find out more about the meal replacement drinks I recommend just drop me an email me.

Your weight loss plan should empower you with knowledge

apple measureYou need tools and information to learn how to lose weight, how to maintain it, and how to change your lifestyle for long-term benefits. Your weight loss program should come with this if it is worth its salt. Think about it, how can you be expected to change your approach to eating, exercise and your lifestyle without any information on how to do this and why you need to do it?

Tools may include calorie allowances for your eating pattern, recipe suggestions, exercise suggestions and most importantly an education on nutrition to you can understand where you have gone wrong in the past and what you need to change.  This could come via DVD, manual or regular emails. Sound complicated? No one said it would be easy! Staying healthy and slim isn’t easy – I know that first hand!

If you want to know about the weight loss plan I would recommend because it teaches you what you need to know about food then get in touch.

Do you have flexibility on food choices?

apple measure

Many diets fail in the long term because they restrict food choices. A good weight loss plan that will stand the test of time will allow you to choose food you like – and still lose weight!
That’s not to make out that it’s magic and that you can get away with stuffing your face full of chocolate, crisps and fizzy drink! What I mean is that it will offer flexibility by teaching you about food and it’s nutritional value so that you can make the right food choices in a balanced way.

Your diet shouldn’t be about eating one type of food or one food group. In the long term this won’t last because you cannot spend your life eating one type of food.  You’re not built that way, life is too complex to sustain it and besides it’s just not healthy for you.

So when you’re choosing a weight loss plan, make sure you can live by its philosophy in the long term. Ensure it gives you options and teaches you want you need to know in order to make long term life choices.

Does your chosen diet have a professional behind it?

apple measure A quality weight loss plan that actually works must have a professional behind it, preferably someone with a working knowledge of nutrition and hands on experience! Since there are so many fad diets out there one way of making sure you are doing what is right for you body is to check its credentials. Does your chosen diet meet the nutritional standards set out by relevant governing bodies?  Does the person/company behind it have the background knowledge and experience behind them to back them?

This is your body we’re talking about here and it is your responsibility to ensure that what you put it through is healthy, does not have long term negative effects and can stand up to a detailed cross examination by those in the know…

Successful weight loss – more on exercise

runner ladyonscale We’ve established that successful weight loss goes hand in hand with exercise. The keys to permanent weight loss are diet and regular exercise.

So how do we get more exercise in our chaotic lives? The answer lies in the small things… Try incorporating these tips into your everyday life:

  • Use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator.
  • Go and talk to co-workers, rather than phoning or e-mailing them.
  • Go for a ten – twenty minute walk during your lunch break – you’ll work much more efficiently afterwards and it’s better than aimlessly trawling the internet!
  • Get off the bus, tube or train a couple of stops early and walk the rest of the way. You might have to schedule in an extra ten minutes but it will be well worth it.
  • Park your car further away from the office or supermarket than you usually do. The extra distance might not seem much, but the additional steps soon add up.
  • Combine socialising with exercise by going out for a walk with your partner or friends instead of going to the pub.
  • Exercise can be easier if you do it with friends, family or colleagues. Maybe start a competition in your household or office to see who can walk the most steps in one week – you’ll all need a pedometer!

Successful weight loss – exercise

runner ladyonscale This is another one of them ‘cannot be avoided’ facts. If we want to lose weight and maintain it, then regular exercise is a must. Weight loss and exercise go side by side. Experts agree on this completely.

It’s true that many of us don’t like this truth and we are probably all guilty of hiding behind the excuse of a busy day. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the body needs exercise. Period. Now exercise doesn’t involve jogging for hours and hours! Regular walks can do a lot for your weight loss plan too. To successfully lose weight we all need to have a program that is tailored to us as individuals – and everyone can find something they like.

Fit exercise into your lifestyle. Since I have some gym equipment at home (because I’m often too busy to go to the gym) I’ve started cycling for 30 minutes every evening while I read or watch a good TV program. (The trick is remembering not to slack)! You could wake up a bit earlier to exercise. Getting a friend or partner on side to exercise with you is also a great motivator. I’m combining the two and my partner and I plan to wake up earlier and go for a jog 3 times a week (I’ll let you know when we do it)! You could keep a set of gym kit in the car and go to the gym straight after work – that’s often easier than having to motivate yourself to go out again after a long day. What about playing with the kids? They can easily make you break into a sweat! Enjoy active things at the weekend. Play tennis, do the garden, go walking… It’s summer (granted a bit of a rainy one) but take the bikes out…

Tip – learn to enjoy exercise. You’ll certainly enjoy the results.

Successful weight loss – everything in moderation

August 17, 2008 at 10:18 am | Posted in body, health, Uncategorized, weight loss | Leave a comment
Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

ladyonscale I’m a strong believer in ‘everything in moderation’ and this series on weight loss is personal because I need to lose a few pounds. (It’s amazing how easily it can creep up on you)! Now I’m not a big snacker, that’s not my weakness. I love desserts! So, since life without our favourite things would possibly not be worth living for some of us, we must learn how to manage our intake of them in order to lose weight successfully.

For long term success, nothing is completely forbidden – not in the weight loss plan I recommend anyway. Instead, there are clear rules, which allow us to have the odd treat each week. This can be done in a way that does not compromise nutrient intake or risk consuming too many calories. The trick here is to keep on top of whether you are maintaining the right ratio of basic food stuffs to fast food and sweet items. When you take this approach you can experience how good it can be to snack without a guilty conscience!
